1811 Golspie Census

Golspie is very fortunate to have an 1811 census which has survived.  Not many did. Early censuses did not require the detail of later ones. The return only names the head of household, gives the number of males and females and provides a rough occupational classification. The return has been slightly simplified in transcription but no attempt has been made to correct arithmetical errors. The original manuscript is held by the Highland Council and the return appears by permission of the Council Archivist.

Transcribed by Malcolm Bangor-Jones and adapted for this website with care.
This census shows 322 families living in the parish of Golspie - a total of 1,391 persons. Two categories of occupation are shown on the original transcription – a) agriculture or b) trade, manufacture & handy craft – for the purpose of this document I am using the words agriculture or trade. Where neither is shown here there was no note in that column on original document.
Please note that this census includes Badcrasky which is nowadays in Rogart parish. Where I state Golspie it means the Village of Golspie
As always all Mc and Mac names are shown here as Mac.
